A Pentecost Reflection

A Pentecost Reflection

220px-Duccio_di_Buoninsegna_018One of the things I love about the Scriptures is that they speak to me where I’m living. As I read the account of the Pentecost in Acts chapter 2 I was drawn to different passages as though they were highlighted. While I have to work at reading the Scripture though lenses that include all of the Bible and that recognize its first audience, it’s much easier for me to view it through the perspective of my life.

As a Pentecostal, “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4

As an evangelist, “Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Acts 2:37

As a preacher, “And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them,” Acts 2:40

As a church planter, “So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.” Acts 2:41 “And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Acts 2:47

As a small group leader, “And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” Acts 2:42

As a minister, “And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.” Acts 2:43

As an unemployed person, “And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.” Acts 2:45

But as a needy Pentecostal, evangelist, preacher, church planter, leader, minister, and unemployed person what captured my heart this Pentecost Sunday was the promise. The promise, which Joel prophesied (Acts 2:17-21) and Jesus made (Acts 1:4-5), wasn’t a promise of power, influence, the birth of the church, church growth, or daily provision. All those things were but the result, the evidence of the promise. Jesus’ promise to them and us was “the gift of the Holy Spirit” Acts 2:38 – God himself.

“For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” Acts 2:39
