Mission to Our Community

sharfest2There is something amazingly powerful about extending no charge, no-strings-attached service that has no purpose other than to bless someone else. It never ceases to amaze me how profoundly people are touched by the simplest acts of genuine care and selfless service.

First off, it is a clear witness to others of the grace that God has extended to us. A tangible unconditional love that not only is visible but is deeply felt. An extravagant love that was modeled by Jesus coming and dying for us. “Freely you have received, freely give” (Mt10:8). Andy Stanley said in response to Christ’s amazing gifts that our first thought every morning should be, “I have a debt to pay.” (you can follow him on Twitter @AndyStanley)

Then there’s the mysteries of God’s love that are revealed through us and to us as we serve. His love is not a commodity that we can hoard because it has a shelf life of zero. However, he has an inexhaustible supply and the more we give it away the more we realize how much love he has given to us. His love does not originate within us yet we are the fortunate conduits that it travels through. His love is a constant stream direct from his heart, like the light that enables life on earth springs from deep in the sun’s core.

Yesterday we inaugurated our commitment to make mission to our community part of the DNA of NineSevenZero Church. We participated in Grand Junction’s annual Sharefest event and it was a great day. It was fun to work together and there is something powerful about modeling this core value to the kids as they worked alongside us. I was also reminded that it was not just the service we provided that was the valued by this woman but, even more, a very real feeling that someone cared about her. Love expressed in service is compelling and it naturally draws people into relationship with one another and with God.

Jesus said, “So if I, the Master and Teacher, washed your feet, you must now wash each other’s feet. I’ve laid down a pattern for you. What I have done, you do.”
