Not A Fan

We all have junctures in life where an interest becomes a career, a hobby turns into a business, a recreational sport turns into a profession or a romantic relationship becomes a marriage. In those moments there are life altering decisions that are made. Questions that must be answered like: Is this a hobby or a business? Is this just interesting or a real passion? Is this just for fun or for something more? Am I just trying this out or am I willing to invest in it? Am I a fan of the idea or a totally invested participant?

Over the next six weeks we are going to examine our relationships with Jesus. We will each be asked to answer the question, “Are you a fan or a follower of Jesus?” Some of us might be tempted to dismiss the question and say that I go to church, I give, I believe in God and Jesus. But one of the scariest passages in the Bible is found in Luke chapter 13. Here Jesus tells of a day when everyone will stand before God. But that’s not the scariest part. Jesus says that some who think they are Christians will hear God say, “I never knew you. Away from me.”

Following Jesus is serious business so we need to understand how Jesus defines that relationship and we must be willing to ask ourselves the hard questions. In Luke 9:23 Jesus tells us what the beginning place is for that journey, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me.” It’s interesting that Jesus never tried to sway the masses or gather an army. Jesus always invited individuals to follow him. Jesus was and is not looking for fans … He’s calling followers. Followers who understand and act on their beliefs that

  • There is no forgiveness without repentance
  • There is no salvation without surrender
  • There is no new life without death
  • There is no believing without following.

Are you comfortable with where you are at in your spiritual growth or are you ready to take your walk with Jesus to the next level? I hope you will all plan to join us for this powerful and challenging study of the central messages of the Gospel and what it means to truly follow Jesus. Wednesday evenings starting 9/23 at 6:30 pm.
