This is The Way – Devo Day 24

Heth – Psalm 119:57-64

57 The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words.
58 I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.
59 When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies;
60 I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments.
61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law.
62 At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your righteous rules.
63 I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts.
64 The earth, O LORD, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!

Psalm 119:57–64 (ESV)

Hastening to God

The psalmist has been referring to himself as a sojourner but I love the declaration at the beginning of this stanza, “The Lord is my portion.” He is saying that God is enough even though he feels like an alien wandering without a home surrounded by enemies. But he declares that he is home when he is in God’s presence.

57 The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep your words.
58 I entreat your favor with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.

Pslam 119:57-58 (ESV)

V57 These are the words of a confident heart, secure in God’s promises. He is satisfied with his portion and that portion is the Lord himself. His promise to keep God’s Word would be an empty vow without the empowering presence of God in his life.

V58 He quickly follows up his promise to God with a prayer for God’s gracious help in fulfilling his promise.

59 When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies;
60 I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments.

Psalm 119:59–60 (ESV)

V59 The psalmist reflects on his ways (the choices and direction of his life) and quickly decides that he needs the counsel of God’s Word to turn him in the right direction and keep him on the path.

V60 There is no delay in his putting his belief and decision into action. When God is moving in the physical or in the hearts of men people make haste to get right with him.

61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law.
62 At midnight I rise to praise you, because of your righteous rules.

Psalm 119:61–62 (ESV)

V61 It’s no surprise that the psalmist has enemies who are seeking to trip him up and forsake his promise. But he is resolved to not listen to them or be swayed by them.

V62 So grateful for God’s Word and the confidence of his faith that he finds himself awakened in the night with thoughts of praise and thanksgiving. He even relishes his time with the Lord even if he loses sleep.

63 I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts.
64 The earth, O LORD, is full of your steadfast love; teach me your statutes!

Psalm 119:63–64 (ESV)

V63 There is a special bond between all who fear the Lord and follow his way. It is the Spirit of God that binds his followers in lockstep with him on The Way.

V64 The psalmist ends this section declaring the wonder of the whole earth filled with the love of God and finds himself again drawn to the Word of God. It is this glorious cycle of worship and blessing.

I am a companion of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts.

QUESTIONS TO PONDER

  1. Do you find yourself increasingly dependent on God’s Spirit guidance and strength to obey and faithfully follow?
  2. Would outsiders say of you that you are a Christ-follower by your words, choices, and actions? How would they characterize the people you travel this life with?
