This is The Way – Devo Day 5

This is The Way – Devo Day 5

Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!

Psalm 139:23–24 (ESV)

This devotional series will be divided into three-day sections each dealing with a similar theme/thought. The first day in each section of the devotional focuses on eight verses from Psalm 119. The second day in each section will look to the New Testament. And the third day (where we are now) will focus us on applying what we’ve learned to our lives. This means we can’t just traffic in the things of God or just talk about His Word. He actually expects (and commands) us to put it into practice. He desires to move us forward in our obedience and our devotion.

Don’t be constrained by the questions below. It is highly likely that the Holy Spirit has been talking to you already. If so, take His lead and work on His agenda for you. Re-read the verse at the beginning of this post and make it a prayer before you start.

APPLICATION – Questions to Answer

  1. Why are you doing this devotional? What is your motivation? What are you hoping to get fromit? Are you just kicking the tires or have you committed to this daily discipline?
  2. In your devotion in the previous two days what has God highlighted to you? Is it something you’ve learned from the Word or was it perhaps something you learned about yourself?
  3. Why do you think God brought that to your attention? What might be His purpose and goals? Knowing these things now, what is your response?
  4. As you read Psalm 119:1-8 what were you thinking? How do you feel? Which of these statements is most true?
    1. I totally identify with the passage personally. I have experienced it and know it is true. I can can honestly make those same declarations.
    2. My heart yearns for that passage to be true in my life.
    3. I was inspired by the psalmist and hope that someday that could be said of me.
    4. I thought it was a little restrictive with all the references to “the law” and obedience. Were’s the love?
  5. What do you think are the costs of doing what God wants you to do? What might be the benefits of doing it God’s way? Do you want to change / grow? Are you willing to do what you must do to change? Are you willing to trust God to lead you in the process?

PRAY

Wrap up this first section of the devotional combining the Scriptures that we’ve focused on the last two days and your answers to the questions above into a prayer. Pray it back to God – what you learned, what you decided, what you committed to. Then, when you are done, make sure you wait silently, patiently, expectantly for God to speak to you (that’s the exciting part).

Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart, (This is The Way)
